Aren't the Dell OEM discs validated anyway? (i acknowledge i probably should know this, merely it been a while)
The COA sticker shows that the particular has a valid individual licence applied, just the restore disks are all basicly VLK versions tied to the manufacturer eg: dell, HP etc

Using OEM stuff, i've never had to put in the serial number before.

Having rebuilt more than dells from the cd than I intendance to count, I can tell you that when using a dell OS installation cd, the production key is built into the prototype and therefore automated. I of the dainty piddling features of the Dell CDs.....

I have an older laptop that came with Vista Ultimate when I got it. I've reinstalled several times and never had to activate. Used the cd on one of my PC's and information technology wont actuate, but information technology likewise wont stop me from using it.... because really, using vista is punishment enough! :)

It's been a long time since I reinstalled XP from a deejay, but I recalled having to enter the fundamental. Maybe I'm recalling incorrect.
Every bit for Vista, well, that'due south what it came with then that what I used. It actually isn't that bad, even on a netbook. Information technology's usable. It's simply like my 2008 servers. The just bad part was existence 200 Windows updates behind!

I too was recently re-installing Vista to a friends laptop, every bit they didn't have a valid fundamental for the W7 information technology previously had before they fecked it :)
I take the media, from my activation pack from MS afterward getting my beginning MCP, so loaded and had to actuate, all went well, also as a Vista install tin TBH
but inside a month, he was back onto me, as information technology was popping up an invalid / pirate Os warning !!!!!!!! AS IF :o)
short version - had to get a W7 central, and load that
but to my knowledge activation is nonetheless needed, but it appears they don't really similar yous doing it ???

I'll bet Microsoft would GIVE you an activation of Vista... out of pity. :)

Dell has a code built into the bios , that allows the disc to self activate , when used on a dell

Yes, Dell OEM are already activated and information technology is only good on Dell products. I know for a fact considering I am a Technical Support Managing director and I have admission to all OS'southward
